Staying Lit
FedSDC X ECRA School to Prison Pipeline (STPP) Litigations Strategies Coalition
The STPP Litigation Strategies Coalition exists to serve as the legal brain for to the group and local groups on the ground to identify legal strategies and engage in strategic litigation to enforce compliance with the law, remedy existing civil rights violations, and address disproportionality in school discipline policies. This group will also help to develop litigation strategies that the Coalition will use as an accountability tool.
Our Story
What started as a roundtable of leaders, activists, advocates, lawyers, and litigators focused on School-to-Prison Pipeline legal strategies and collaborations, morphed into a unique partnership of non-profit legal organizations to explore, and promote efforts to replace punitive school disciplinary policies with evidence-based solutions that eliminate racial disparities and help all students realize their full potential. Since the passage of Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) and the COVID-19 pandemic, FedSDC and ECRA among others have sought to promote an aligned goal of education equity by ensuring that community advocates (grassroots groups, parents, teachers, and students) received policy guidance and expertise and training on what the law requires.
Over the past year, FedSDC and ECRA have actively engaged in activities designed to build the capacity of local advocates to participate in policy implementation and legal actions in their communities, cities, and states. FedSDC also continues to advocate and lobby on a variety of critical education equity issues, including police free schools and excessive discipline practices, and it plans to continue to support capacity building at the federal, state and local levels to encourage the elimination of exclusions discipline policies while seeking to advance accountability through policy and litigation.
